A Sassy Spa To Bring Spring Home

Serenity-healing waters

Serenity-healing waters

Ancient cultures way back in the 4th century understood the healing magic of pure water, essential oils and mood enhancing fragrant air. What a combination for detangling emotions, de-stressing and de-toxifying the body, and, let us not forget – awakening the libido. It was not until the 1600’s that the word Spa (medicinal or mineral spring) arose as a short cut to those rejuvenating pleasures.

Spa was adopted from the name of a health resort in eastern Belgium, known since the 14th century, that featured mineral springs believed to have curative properties.

It was only eight years ago that I began treating myself to regular rejuvenating spa in my home bathroom. Back then, I discovered a lovely book by Mary Muryn called Water Magic: Healing Bath Recipes for the Body, Spirit and Soul. It showed me how to turn my bath into a spa and a healing ritual for my mind, body and spirit.

I’ve since discovered other wonderful books and items devoted to taking care of the self such as Art of the Bath written in 1997 by Stefanie Marlis.

The idea of any of these books and products is to help stimulate our imagination. My favorite spa regimen for making the transition from the blah winter to sassy spring is an invigorating salt bath. But find out what works for you. Visit aroma therapists and discover the scents, oils and herb combinations that work best for your needs. It is important, of course, to understand the usage, properties, safety precautions and effects of  natural herbs & oils. Over indulgence can produce harmful side effects.

Ready, get set. After filling the tub with water, add salts and herbs allowing them  to steep for a few minutes, pour and swish the water around. Step in and enjoy the soak.  If you want to add oil to the bath, soak for about five minutes first so the oils can penetrate the skin.

Done pruning? Rise slowly from the bath and sit for a moment as you pat – not rub – yourself dry with your soft towel. Liberally apply your favorite body cream all over, slip on your robe, step into your slippers and call it a wonderful day.
